Try checking the SANE driver tables to see the current status of scanner 
compatability http://www.mostang.com/sane/sane-supported-devices.html

Epson hardware in general seems to be pretty linux friendly and their scanners 
have quite a few stable drivers listed on the SANE website.  I don't have any 
first-hand knowledge to back that up though, maybe someone else can share 
their experiences.
