Yes, you will want to do some homework before you fork out money for any
internal modem for Linux.  Most internal modems sold now are win-modems. 
I know you are concerned about price but it may be worth looking into an
external modem instead.  I've only used the external USR 56k Fax/Modems
and they work great in Linux for both Faxing and modem use.  The only
thing about them is they retail for $150 since they are external and
hardware modems.  I've tried looking around the City for internal hardware
modems and could only find them at one place (Techtronics), and it was
selling for $100 dollars since internal hardware modems are so rare these
days.  Suffice it to say I didn't buy it, and told them they were going to
have a hard time selling an old internal hardware modem when you can buy a
brand new external one from a better manufacturer for $50 more.  And yes,
stay away from Conexant, conexant = the devil :)
