if the problem is getting on a mailing list, then we need a page on the
website that lets them put their address in a form and hit "subscribe" along
with some basic instructions on how to work things.

at far less likely to keep them involved, since they have to keep visiting the
forums whereas the email just gets delivered to them. couple that with the
fact that there will likely be fewer people with good answers and the reasons
to stay thin out...

archives are good for this, just tack on a "reply to this" form and you'd have
a web interface to the list...
