I realise from the other emails that he is on Telus and not Shaw, but I thought I would jump in on this one to mention that the "short name" as you call it for shawmail.cg.shawcable.net or the alias "shawmail" does indeed work in Linux. Actually, it will work in any OS. If it's not working for you then you have misconfigured /etc/resolv.conf For it to work you need to be resolving DNS through Shaws DNS servers.
