Hmm, well there isn't a way for pump to do the same thing that I know of. 
If it's an issue then I would recommend replacing pump with dhcpcd.  pump
is rather old and most modern distributions use dhcpcd now instead of pump
as it doesn't have many features.  Also, people tend to have lots of
problems with pump.
