i think the challenge w/cinelerra is its amazingly high hardware requirements. 
for a front end system they suggest a Dual 2Ghz Athlon with 512MB RAM. + 
512MB for background rendering. +1GB for high definition. that's a 
non-trivial system, even today. and apparently cinelerra really does need 
that calibre of hardware. WOW!

projects like kdenlive or kino are targetted at more normal hardware setups.
