while konq doesn't let you pick, you won't get corrupted downloads (it just
always defaults to the safest method; binary)... you are right about the
flexibility, though... full ftp apps like kbear offer many more options (like
ftp via a proxy, queuing up/downloads, syncing dirs, choosing ascii over
binary d/l, etc, etc) that just aren't appropriate for a file manager ...
for most people, though, those extra options are just not needed, while the
power ftp'ers can use dedicated ftp apps.
