Because you recieve programs from the net and use them in Windows.  So
things like Email (in particular) but also file sharing, potentially surfing
on random web-sites, etc.

This can all be handled by the Linux Server so that you only see "sanitized"
results.  That's pretty rare, even in the corporate world though.
Especially for web browsing, and P2P apps.

On the other hand, if you are actually "only access the net with linux" (You
cannot read this message with Windows) and you have a Windows machine with
no network connection, do not share files (CDs or Floppys), and use it ONLY
as a standalone machine, then you don't need any protection on your Windows
machine.  My guess though, is that you DO connect to the net with your
Windows box.
