Another VERY important thing to do for Windows computers is to go into the Internet Options/Prefs/Security and remove all the bogus Microsoft peer certificates and well, ALL of them. They are not necessary except to do more bogus updates or give Microsoft the power to cluster everyone's computers and perhaps almost stop the Internet. Most of the rootkits out there rely on those certificates to gain access to the entire system via network or Internet. Microsoft will just try and put them back on the first time you visit www.microsoft.com or one of it's affiliates anyway. So unless you set stringent certificate policies, be prepared to remove them more than once. : )
