Fear not.  That's my tip.  :-)

Ok, here's something a little more substantial.  Always keep a copy of a 
working kernel.  I've compiled a few kernels, and have made more than a few 
duds among them (forgetting to include EXT3 support in the kernel when your 
root drive is EXT3 is a sure-fire way to get in trouble - ah, there's another 
tip).  Make sure you keep an entry in your lilo/grub configuration that 
points to a kernel that you know works, so that if you mess things up, you 
can still reboot to a known-good kernel.

Remember, if it doesn't boot, don't panic, even if your kernel did.  (sigh, 
Linux humour, but I couldn't resist).
