Give 'er.

Especially if your using GRUB rather than LILO as the boot loader, I'd say
do it again and again until it works.  The first few times through, you'll
want to spend a long time looking at the various options for the kernel,
just so you know what's where.  Also, there should be a .config file
somewhere that will have the default config which is already on your system.
Where that config is will depend on your distro.  But you could search for
it.

Just don't overwrite your default kernel, and all will be well.
