This is good advice. Have a boot floppy before hand. It doesn't have to be specifically for you machine, Knoppix ot Tom's Root Boot will be fine, but have a way to boot before you run into problems, and you'll solve them MUCH easier.
A system that doesn't boot isn't anything overly serious. if you get into that position, post to the list here, and we'll get you back up and running. You'll want to keep a copy of your old kernel. Don't overwrite it. You can throw it into your home directory even. Be careful with the modules too. That's my tip. :-) Ok, here's something a little more substantial. Always keep a copy of a working kernel. I've compiled a few kernels, and have made more than a few duds among them (forgetting to include EXT3 support in the kernel when your root drive is EXT3 is a sure-fire way to get in trouble - ah, there's another tip). Make sure you keep an entry in your lilo/grub configuration that points to a kernel that you know works, so that if you mess things up, you can still reboot to a known-good kernel. Remember, if it doesn't boot, don't panic, even if your kernel did. (sigh, Linux humour, but I couldn't resist).
