Redhat 6.0 and 7.x wouldn't use my swap, it just came right out and said there wasn't enough actual RAM to perform the installation and then gave me the option to reboot. Maybe they fixed that problem in RH8 or maybe it just didn't like that particular compaq 486 laptop. Strange....
I had no problem installing RedHat 7.2 on a Pentium with only 32MB of ram. You need to use text mode and maybe advanced (I can't remember) but it does work. 8 Megs however is probably not enough, I would recommend slackware for such low memory installs.
