AbiWord, koffice, staroffice and openoffice are good applcations to 
modifying MSWord docs, I use AbiWord and OpenOffice myself.  If you have 
the option of changing formats I recommend trying RTF.  All 
wordprocessing applications can recignize this format and is less pron 
to messing around the layout from app to app.

Open Office does a good job of opening office Documents and you can 
even get your truetype fonts working with it.
