I sell these things daily and I can confirm that the printers are
basically a loss leader...something inexpensive to get you in the door
and then sell you something else. A couple of the printer reps have
said in an indirect way that that is the way they make their money. As
long as you accept that as a truth you won't be disappointed. A lot of
people say, "I might as well buy a new printer casue it is cheaper than
a new printer." May be true but consider this...if your car runs out of
gas...do you buy a new car?

Think of a printer like a guinea pig or a car. The initial investment
really does cost you nothing when you look at it. It is the gas, oil,
insurance, etc...or in the case of the pig...cage, food, shavings...that
costs you the money.
