You may wish to investigate somethiing like apt4rpm to circumvent issues like you have been describing in your attempts to upgrade RedHat. Check out http://apt4rpm.sourceforge.net and give it a go. I found that, especially with RH, RPM alone is a huge PITA, but apt4rpm actually makes it quite powerful IMHO. I'm using it for my SuSE installs and have not had any complaints thus far--very slick.
