The packages were downloaded with the apt-get utiliy.  I'll try restoring rpm again and see.  If not I might just go ahead and try the newer distro of RH and see if things go better.  I mean RH8 is the newest distro I've installed.  I'm sure there are shinier and prettier things out there.  My original goal was to learn how to update things with rpm and see how far I go and learn as much as I can.  Maybe gentoo might be worth a whirl.

I just don't like the idea of having outdated software sitting on my server with holes and flaws and bleeding edge might cause infections ;-) Has the updater applications improved much?  I hear so much with how easy gentoo updates that it might be what I'm looking for.  I'll see you guys at tonights meeting.

Okay.... here's the update. I've attempted to upgrade rpm to see if it
might help my previous problem. Well things got worse. Not only rpmq
doesn't work but now rpm craps out the same way. Does anyone know of
these issues with glibc 2.3.2? I have no idea of what to do from here.
Can someone please help? Is rpm FUBARed?

hrm... it really sounds like you're installing unofficial packages, or
packages for the wrong OS...

in any case, at this point you're options are pretty limited... best bet is
probably to grab the proper RPM for the rpm tools (e.g. off the installation
cd) and use rpm2cpio to extract the contents which you will then have to
manually copy the files to the right places... hopefully that will get rpm
back on its feet...

from there you can then go about fixing the other problems
