Thanks Nathaniel, sorry didn't reply earlier my Shaw Cable modem fritzed
over the weekend and forgot to reply.
Am I right in thinking that I can record the CDs in raw then use Grip to
rip + encode the resulting file?
Would dd if=/dev/cdrom of=<trackname>audio.raw work to get the
track onto the disc?

Not sure what you are trying to do. If you want to rip a CD, start Grip, configure it so it knows what to read. Insert a CD, it'll name the songs and you can rip & encode them. IF you have some wav files on your hardrive, you'll have to name them yourself, and then use lame (or your favorite wavtomp3 encoder) to encode them. Automagically naming the tracks happens usually through some program reading the CDROM and getting all the information it needs to find the CDID and then get the tracks from CDDB...
Does that make sense?
