If she wants to try before she buys, get a copy of CLUGGIX for her.  Then
she can see what it is like and try a few things out without ditching her
present install.

WOuld suggest GAIM for messaging....using it at work and home and enjoy it.
Do my knowledge the only thing it doesn't do is webcamming...and trying to
get get file transfers working...but still experimenting.  COuld be the
firewall at work.  I use OOo at home and am in the process of transfering
all my files over to its file format.

As far as the CD issue, try cleaning the lens on the drive and the disk
itself.  I ahve some semoi-scratched disks and mine still reads them.. odd
error here and there though.
