Hi ya Cameron,

Sounds like you have found a piece of hardware that doesn't feel like
playing nice, or at the very least have run into a bad install. I don't
know if I'll be much help, but my recommendation is to stick with it. If
you manage to get this fixed, then in the process, you will have learned
much much more than you would have if you gave up. However, that doesn't
really help with the frustrations...

I haven't been following the thread, but it sounds like your LILO or GRUB
isn't pointing at the correct kernel. But somewhere in the process, you did
manage to find one, and are able to begin the startup process for X Windows
(which isn't completing properly). If this is the case, then you have at
least two, possibly more, distinct issues. This type of situation is a pain
to work through, because it get's tough to tell which issue is causing the
abnormal results you are seeing. (but I know you are an experienced
troubleshooter, so bear with me as I work through this...)

I would suggest maybe booting from a CD, and mounting your hard drive(s).
To make life easy, maybe try modifying your rc.d scripts to NOT start X on
boot. If you are able to make it to the console fine, then the problem lies
beyond that. If not, then you need to focus on first being able to get the
core system booted properly. This might require you to recompile your
kernel (judging from your boot problems), or simply pointing LILO/GRUB at
the correct kernel.

But of course, I could be way way way off on this. I did look through the
last couple of messages, but am not certain I fully understand the problems
your having. I'll read the full thread tomorrow, if you're still having
problems.

Good Luck.

Shawn

Subject: (clug-talk) Red Hat Install - UPDATE

UPDATE:

This may not be the pretty way to do it but for now I switched the boot
order in my BIOs so that it boots from Hard Drive before floppy and I get
what I assume is the LILO boot prompt. Basically a picture of a Red Hat and
the entry I placed in there for Booting. It also gives me the option to hit
ctrl+x for text mode. WHen I do that i get "boot: ". I tried entering
linux 3 here but it says no such image and that pressing {Tab} gives you a
list. I hot tab and all I get is the entry I put in. If I proceed in
non-text mode I get the same thing as I did before the flashing "matrixy
thing"...which Aaron has pointed out means my x config is screwed.

I am at a loss and don't know where to go from here. I am tempted to just
reload everything and say screw it...but the time involved... I am really
feeling stupid here and I think you can all sense my frustration. I am
almost to the point of just saying...well if I know lots of about technology
and computers and stuff and I can't do something simple like this, than why
freaking bother.
