I was gonna mention the BIOS boot order, but I forgot to. I'm glad you
thought of it. It looks like you're a step further now.

I think the easiest way for you to get logged in would be to fix your X
config.

Start by trying to boot with a sane resolution. At the boot prompt type
vga=785. If that doesn't work try pressing 'e' to get a menu of options
(GRUB only).

If you can get to a text root prompt, try running Xconfigurator or xf86setup
to redo the X config. Try a resolution of 640x480 and max. 16-bit color.

BTW, if you do happen to decide to do a complete reinstall at some point, a
good way to start using Linux is by making one big '/' partition (possibly
with a '/home' partition if you think you'll be working in it with any data
you'll wanna keep). The reason I suggest this is simplicity in
troubleshooting. When you're just beginning, it is much simpler to mount
/dev/hda1 than worry about which partition is where, what's on it and how it
works. :-P That comes later. :-)

HTH,
Curtis

Subject: (clug-talk) Red Hat Install - UPDATE

UPDATE:

This may not be the pretty way to do it but for now I switched the boot
order in my BIOs so that it boots from Hard Drive before floppy and I get
what I assume is the LILO boot prompt. Basically a picture of a Red Hat and
the entry I placed in there for Booting. It also gives me the option to hit
ctrl+x for text mode. WHen I do that i get "boot: ". I tried entering
linux 3 here but it says no such image and that pressing {Tab} gives you a
list. I hot tab and all I get is the entry I put in. If I proceed in
non-text mode I get the same thing as I did before the flashing "matrixy
thing"...which Aaron has pointed out means my x config is screwed.

I am at a loss and don't know where to go from here. I am tempted to just
reload everything and say screw it...but the time involved... I am really
feeling stupid here and I think you can all sense my frustration. I am
almost to the point of just saying...well if I know lots of about technology
and computers and stuff and I can't do something simple like this, than why
freaking bother.
