hrm? Alt-F2 does nothing when sitting at the console login prompt? you sure? 
when you press Alt-F2 does it say something like:

        "Kernel 2.4.9-16mdk on an i586 / tty2"

note the tty # at the end of the line... and to re-ask the question from my 
previous email that you didn't answer explicitly: is this when logging in on 
the console or via an XDM GUI? IOW, command line or graphical log in?
