I take it I need the non-gnu version [???] you need automake 1.6.1 or better. according to the "YOU'RE USING" message, you've got 1.6 installed (as in "one point six dot oh"). the trailing period is part of the error message; the actual verification checks for 1.6.*, and of course 1.6 lacks the ending dot and so fails. this gives you the rather humerous error you see. i've reported it and it should be fixed soon enough. in the mean time, upgrade to 1.6.1 or better (which is what the msg was trying to tell you =) - -- Aaron J.
