Sorry for the duplicate issues but there are new issues. (Was KDEInit errors)

I'm having some issues with RPM and my system. I have RH7.3 on my computer and am having a very difficult time with KDE and Gnome at this time. I've recently attempted to upgrade KDE to 3.1.4 using apt-get for RPM and the install ran without any issues. Then when I logged in I got an error "Couldn't start kdeinit. Check your installation redhat." Then all the text in KDE are gone. The text in the menu is gone, the text in most windows are gone... basically all the text in KDE is gone. Not being able use this environment I logged into gnome and was fine for a day while I was trying to solve the issues with KDE. So uninstall and reinstall of KDE brought the same results however today when I logged into gnome I lost the running applications items on the gnome panel. Now both desktops environments are hard to use.

I don't want to make things worse and I would really like to get this issue resolved. apt-get was grabbing the sources from kde-redhat.org and things seemed to be running fine. I'm running out of DEs and getting very furstrated with working in such conditions. Can someone please help point out what I might be doing wrong? Better still, have a solution to get KDE up and running again?
