Seems that the windows option is not in the menu.  Hmm.... I'm starting to think that I have a bad package in the mixes for gnome.  I'll try installing direct from rpm and see what I get thanks for your input Jesse.

Well, I hope I can provide some help...

I'm having some issues with RPM and my system. I have RH7.3 on my
computer and am having a very difficult time with KDE and Gnome at this
time. I've recently attempted to upgrade KDE to 3.1.4 using apt-get for
RPM and the install ran without any issues. Then when I logged in I got
an error "Couldn't start kdeinit. Check your installation redhat." Then
all the text in KDE are gone. The text in the menu is gone, the text in
most windows are gone... basically all the text in KDE is gone. Not
being able use this environment I logged into gnome and was fine for a
day while I was trying to solve the issues with KDE. So uninstall and
reinstall of KDE brought the same results however today when I logged
into gnome I lost the running applications items on the gnome panel.
Now both desktops environments are hard to use.

I'm not sure what the problem is here, but my guess is that reinstalling kde is
the best way to go. You might want to try getting all the rpms and upgrading
them with an rpm -Uvh *rpm and see what happens. Your other options are to try
a different version of kde if you can find the packages, or build it from
source. You could also try deleting your old kde preferences because there
could be a conflict between the old ones and the new ones. I found a short
article on upgrading kde in redhat 7.3 which may provide some help:
http://archives.real-time.com/pipermail/kde-redhat-users/2003-
October/000203.html You can also try building Garnome which would let you build
the latest versions of both KDE and Gnome: http://www.gnome.org/~jdub/garnome/
Your Gnome problem should be a little bit easier to fix. The list of running
applications is a panel appplet, just right-click on the panel and there will
be a menu that will let you add aplets to the panel. The window list is called
Window List and the MacOS style is called Window list icon. Your sessions
should be saved automatically, but there is an option in the control-panel to
save your current session.

Good luck,

Jesse
