A friend got me into Slackware. I love that it is very stable,
which allows me to use it for all my various purposes without it
collapsing under the strain: a reliable desktop (office work,
media playing/editing and gaming), experimentation w/ server
apps (such as Apache, sendmail, etc.) and learning Linux
internals (CLI, source compiles, etc.)

I would probably be into Gentoo if it weren't for the fact that I my
computer is long in the tooth and a little bit resource challenged. It
would take days to compile all the apps I use.
