by "beginner" do you mean introductory? if so, I would assume that the
beginner ones will be shorter and should probably have a shorter
discussion time alotted to it, compared to the "not beginner" discussion.
my feeling is that an intro presentation would hopefully lead those in the
audience who are interested to do further subsequent reading/learning on
their own, and thus the discussion time for an intro pres could be used
for clarification on presentation details, and other intro questions that
could help the audience members determine whether to spend more time on
their own researching the topic. alternatively, I picture the "not
beginner discussion" going deeper. I think an initial format of 1/3 : 2/3
or 40% : 60% for the presentation/discussion lengths might be a good
starting point. this is how I envision things, maybe others will speak up
to the contrary.

if we have only 1 presentation, 2h might be more than we need, but it all
depends on the presentation and the audience and how far the discussion
goes. if we have 2 presentations, 2h might not be enough. if we go with
an evening during the week, it might be hard for people to do more than
2h, I know I prob wouldn't want to do more than 2.5h if it were an evening
session. weekends would probably make it easier to have longer sessions.
for evenings, currently my vote would be for any day but tuesday. I think
we also need to consider whether people will be bringing laptops or other
development hardware. if so, this could definitely require more time
allotted to the session.
