Don't know if I can help you with Pine, but I'm curious what you are trying to do with your mail server.
Do you just want to be able to send mail out through your own computer? Or do you plan on hosting email accounts? If the first, then the default ssmtp that Gentoo installs is more than sufficient (I'm guessing you're on a Gentoo box from your earlier posts). So would be default installs of Postfix and Sendmail. If, on the other hand you want email to be sent TO your server for processing and delivery to local accounts, then yes, you will need Postfix/Sendmail/qmail/etc. However, there is a ton of configuration that has to happen in all these before you can actually receive mail to your local mailboxes. Not to mention Domain name setup as well.
