try "man mutt" or "man pine". I think you can create a .pine or .mutt file in your home directory that alters how the program works. For Pine, there might be a setting somewhere that says to use Postfix as it's server instead of Sendmail, or something that might point to the lockup issue. (Postfix is a drop in replacement for Sendmail, so anything that works with Sendmail should also work with Postfix without any changes).
