In pine, there is a configuration (when in Pine, go into setup, and then configure) The 3rd line down is the setting for the smtp server. I have found to send mail with pine, you need to set the smtp server here, for it to work (I didn't even have postfix or sendmail installed at the time!)

I'm not familiar with Postfix, but perhaps you should modify "sendmail-path"
in your ~/.pinerc ? You may also consider "smtp-server =
shawmail.cg.shawcable.net" in order to relay through Shaw.
