Yep, there are a number of sripts that can handle this for you. However, if your
business depends on your Internet connection (web pages, email, etc.), then I would
not recommend this.

Let's say your IP address has been in service for some time, and then get's changed.
The scripts you dynamically go out and update the IP address on your DNS records.
This is great. Except that at this point Client A comes along and want's to spend
mega bucks with you - but the DNS change hasn't propagated yet, so they just keep
getting DNS Errors, or 404's. So they decide to move on to another company that
doesn't (appear) to have these problems. If the client had visited anywhere from 1
hour to 3 days later, they wouldn't have had this issue.

If you decide to go this route, dyndns.org has a list of scripts for various systems,
and IPCop can update a number of public DNS servers. If you are not using one of the
public DNS Servers (dyndns, zoneedit, etc), then you will have to dig deeper. There
are some scripts online (you'll have to google for them) that can detect when your IP
changes and update a non-public DNS server. For these to work, the DNS server must
support the nsupdate tool, and may require authentication.

Subject: [clug-talk] dynamic IP and DNS

Hi Guys

I'm looking into switching from Nucleus to Shaws small business package and
the only problem that I can see is that the small business is dynamic IP's.
Does anyone know if there is a way to make a DNS server aware of IP changes
without manually changing it? I'm not running the DNS server or anthing like
that just a RH 8 webserver.

Evan
