Which would be a good reason to use gentoo. ;-D > and > when specifying ./configure options, I have to add > --with-kernel=/usr/src/linux, even though that path is (supposedly) the > default. Interesting. Maybe I'll modify the ebuild and try it. > I don't know why I have to manually specify it but when I do, it > works, and when I don't, it doesn't. Not sure if that helps at all. :-P > > Does having an ALSA USE flag on Gentoo mean for the kernel, or for > compiling ALSA separately? Sorry for not being "hip" and in-the-know about > Gentoo. ;-D Actually it tells emerge [gentoo package manager] to add in ALSA support to packages which have it as a compile-time option. That in turn causes ALSA to become a necessary dependancy, hence it gets compiled. When I said I injected it that means I told it ALSA was installed, which it was, but in a different way. Kinda confusing, esp if another package needs the ALSA source to be able to compile. > > The kernel ALSA driver is usually pretty close behind the source releases, > and the only other reason for compiling ALSA source releases are the libs > (for other programs that may need ALSA libs) and the utils (for mixer > settings, etc.).
