Hi Curtis.

If it helps any, I'm running Gentoo on a PII-400 with 448M RAM (3x128M
sticks, and a 64M stick - for those wondering about the odd number).

Yes, the compile times can be a little long, but I find they're pretty
reasonable for most things, once you have the core system and the usual
dependancies set up. For example, Apache only tacks about 20 - 30 minutes
to compile. (I should time it one of these days, or sit at the computer
during the compile.....)

You can use the "time" command to time how long commands take. So for this example you can use:

time emerge apache

I run a gentoo system, but I still compiled apache + php by hand. It is a bit less convenient (anyone know how to start it on boot?), but I like the extra control, especially since I have done the apache+php combo on many other machines, so I'm used to where the manual install puts things. Emerge is a great tool, but it can be an annoyance at times. For example, it compiled the Mozilla suite for GNOME (yes, I know, something about the GNOME browser). I wouldn't have cared if it were broken, but emerge goes right ahead and gobbles my system resources for an extra one or two hours. Gentoo is amazing, I would recommend it to any fan of linux (mind you, not for newbies).

Cheers,

Why am I scared of Windows? Let's just say I will be glad I have my Knoppix CD.
