  i) what version of xfree86?

 ii) what video card?

I've an ATI Rage Mobility with 8Mb on board, and it simply won't do
hardware GL with my X (Debian stable/Woody 4.2.1-3.woody3). If I
cared enough, I could install a backport of xfree86 4.3.x and try
that. I don't care enough.

If your card will do hardware GL, dri.sourceforge.net is supposed to
speak of the capabilities of your card. My /var/log/XFree86.0.log
also mentions http://gatos.sf.net

Of course, you could check with xfree86.org as well. As for X.org and
freedesktop.org, I've never heard of either of them but could that be
due to the reported fork in xfree86 people were talking about a month
ago? Licencing problems, yada yada.
