people on a linux email list generally use linux.  any number of them may or 
may not be using x.  if not, then you use a text only mail client like pine.  

not everyone uses a window system with bubbly applications like kmail.  it is 
actually quite common for people to not use a window based client.

it is a general practice of mailing lists all over the world, that have strong 
ties to the open source / linux / programming communities, to use text only 
for that very reason.
