The problem here, which the author seems to be missing, is that everyone and their secretaries use MS Word for document exchange over the internet. I would love to send .sxw OpenOffice CV files to prospective employers but the chances of them using OpenOffice over M$ Office is practically zero to one. But in earnst one of the driving points made by this author is thrown at you like a brick in the following statement:
"You are basically assuming that everyone has on their desktop the same software that you have. That often goes against the spirit of the Internet which is supposed to be about inter-operability of heterogeneous systems. That fact that one ``persistently predatory monopoly''1 attempts to subvert that goal, doesn't mean that you should go along with it." and "Use of MS-Word for document exchange is simply bad network citizenship"
