Hi Folks,

I've been there. The latest N-vidia drivers kind suck in my oppinion. To date
I've had the most consistent success with this one:

Version: 1.0-4496
Operating System: Linux IA32
Release Date: July 28, 2003
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-4496.html

1./ download it.
2./ fire up a console (eg. ctrl-alt-F5)
3./ log in as root
4./ type 'init 3' without the quotes (to shut down X)
5./ type 'sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run' and follow the directions
6./ restart the box (yeah I know)
7./ fire up a console again once it's started (eg. ctrl-alt-F5)
8./ type 'init 3'
9./ type 'sax2'
10./ play around with the settings and make sure your driver says
'nvidia' (not 'nv') (for best results use 16bit instead of 32bit)
11./ You'll be able to have 3d with this driver, so make sure it's checked
12./ Accept it all and test. Test screeen should have a nice little 3d circle
in the centre to show all is go.
13./ If everything is good, save the settings
14./ type 'init 5' to restart X
15./ you should see the nvidia logo screen

You should have 3D now as well. Test it with a wonderfull little mouse powered
3d flight sim called GL-117 :)) or the obligatory tuxracer herring run.

Good luck with it.

Thanks Jessie.

I was sure I followed all their instructions, and still wasn't able to get
things running. But the sax2 line looks different than what I was doing. I'll
try again in the next day or so.

I have installed the Nvidia driver through YOU in the past, but it installs an
old version anyways. It very simple to get the latest Nvidia drivers on your
box. Just go to the Nvidia website ( http://www.nvidia.com/ ) and download the
Linux IA32 graphic card driver installer. There are special instruction for
installing under SuSE on the download page. It's as simple as switching to
runlevel 3 and running the installer as root. This will give you a wizard that
will guide you through installing the drivers and downloading/compiling the
kernel module. Once it is done you run Sax2 with the command:
# sax2 -m 0=nvidia
and configure your graphics card. Don't worry about checking the 3d
acceleration
check box, as the docs say that it doesn't work in SuSE 9.0. Once you are done
you should be able to switch to runlevel 5 and see the Nvidia splash screen
when
X starts up.
