I went through shutting down the XFree86 now.

Thanks a lot, guys, and Jesse Kline. I followed your instruction which is more understandable for me. Using Ctrl.-Alt.-F1, the X windows was shut down and command line appeard.

However, I could not use the command "init 3" or "init 5" coz system could not locate "init" command. I was using "whereis init" try to locate where "init" is. RH9 did show me couples of directories there, but within none of them I could find it. Hence, I went ahead execute "/usr/bin/vmware-config-tools.pl", how lovely, the script worked very well, there was no any error info to me anymore. I deadly happy to see that "Enjoy VMware ------VMware team" in the final result of the script. As well, I could not issue "init 5" to return back to the x windows. Anyway, I just use another way to shutdown whole system and reboot it by Ctrl.-Alt.- Del.
After rebooting the RH9 VM, I understand how powerful the VMware tools are. And I do understand now why in the VMware manual say: " Do not start the X server in the guest operating
system until you install VMware Tools." :-)
