That's strange that it couldn't find init. Were you logged in as root? The other command you can try is: /sbin/telinit 3 If you switch to a console using Ctrl.-Alt.-F1, you will not switch runlevels, so you don't have to switch back to runlevel 5, or reboot the system to get back into X. Just type Ctrl.-Alt.-F7.
