For the record, that just gets you back to a console.  X may still be
running (you can see by "<ALT>-F7").  To _kill_ X if you're running a
display manager (kdm, gdm, xdm, wdm), you need to run "/etc/init.d/kdm
stop" (or "xdm stop" or "gdm stop" ...).

On my system, init is in /sbin/init.  It must be run by root.
