Thanks for the tips guys. I'll try to make the shift in thinking and start researching the various parts. I'm coming into Linux programming almost from scratch - I know a little VI(M), and PHP, but I wouldn't use PHP for desktop development (I know you can, but I want to broaden my language skills). Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and dive back into C/C++ (been about a decade since I last coded in C), learn from there then branch into other languages.
