Thanks for the tips guys. I'll try to make the shift in thinking and start researching the various parts. I'm coming into Linux programming almost from scratch - I know a little VI(M), and PHP, but I wouldn't use PHP for desktop development (I know you can, but I want to broaden my language skills). Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and dive back into C/C++ (been about a decade since I last coded in C), learn from there then branch into other languages.

IMO C/C++ are still good for general programming. If I understand correctly, you're looking for something more like VB for desktop development. You could try GLADE 2, which allows GUI design with C/C++ backend, with GTK+.

I'll probably be posting questions to the Programming mailing list as I find them. See ya there soon.. :)

I'm finally making the switch from my Windows desktop to a Linux desktop. The one thing that's holding me back some is the development environment. In Windows, I'm used to working with VB, the .NET Studio, Homesite, etc. The web development area isn't a problem (using Quanta), but the desktop
development area is. As near as I can tell, there is no clear comparison
in Linux.

I have found KDevelop, and Gambas, and both seem to serve their purpose
(not sure if I would use Gambas though). KDevelop looks to be pretty
powerful, but either I'm missing some core knowledge (likely), or you need
to be a low level developer to use it. Writing a console based app seems
to be simple enough (need to actually do one though to be sure), depending
on the language chosen. But there seems to be an intuitive wall that I
can't seem to get through for the desktop apps.

So, I'm looking for tips and/or tutorials on how to BEGIN programming for
the Linux desktop. Thanks in advance.

(I posted this to the programming sig, but thought others not on that list
might have some input as well...)

Why am I scared of Windows? Let's just say I will be glad I have my Knoppix CD.
