I'd personally suggest starting with Ghost. Clone the entire HDD. I believe they call it a sector copy.
This won't help you at all in terms of recovery, and it'll take FOREVER (and this is from a stage 1 Gentoo user), but it'll allow you to PROBABLY recover what you already have in the event that you make it worse. So think of this as a sketchy backup of a sketchy disk. Keep that in mind. It certainly doesn't mean that you're safe. I'd still work from the assumption that if you lose the HDD, then the data is also gone. But this MIGHT help. Maybe. If you're lucky.... It certainly won't hurt, and it MIGHT help.
