well, not unless you want single sign on. and w/out it you have to keep your 
UID/GIDs consistent across all the boxes. so. technically: yes. practically: 
no.

this is what i'd recommend. it's really not too bad to get set up once you've 
done it once or twice. SUSE makes it pretty easy, though you still have to do 
the initial set up by hand.

this would actually make a cool little CLUG presentation, as it is easy to go 
through in well under an hour (assuming one doesn't go into all the gory 
details and possible options ;) and probably is of fairly high interest.
