There is a "pam_ldap" module that will allow authentication via LDAP. So, in theory, I should be able to enter my username/password on my workstation, and instead of checking the local /etc/passwd file, it would check the LDAP server. I'm a little unclear on all the details at this point, but as near as I can tell, that's basically all there is to it. (other than populating the LDAP directory of course). If it helps some, I came across a HOW-TO for LDAP on Gentoo Linux. It's Gentoo specific, but does offer some insights into how LDAP authentication would work.
