One thing that you can do is take a knoppix CD with you and ask to have the laptop 
booted against that. It will give you a good indication if the laptop will be 
compatible out of the box.

I purchased a Toshiba at the start of this year and overall I am very happy with it. 
However, that being said, I did not do enough research before I made my purchase and 
have since discovered that the line of laptop I have has an overheating problem. I 
would make sure that you google the model/make of the laptop you intend to purchase 
and find out if there are any hidden gotcha's with it. Lucky for me the overheating 
problem seems to be related to a poor heatsink design that requires a good dose of 
compressed air every few months.

I think the buyer beware warning applies double for laptops, try not to impulse buy 
because it's a good price. Go home and check that the laptop will meet your needs and 
does not have hidden issues.
