I've heard that some places refuse to let you do that.  They don't
know knoppix and think you may be trying to infect the thing.

Other resources worth trying include:

   - Werner Heuser's tuxmobil.org; he has a lot of
     laptops/portables/handhelds info on line.

   - http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/

Big Blue gets a lot of praise these days.  IBM's Thinkpads handle
Linux well.

Mine's a Dell Inspiron and it's been a great machine.  They
specifically refused to sell it to me without Windows.  I doubt this
has changed since then.

One thing to be careful with is high-end video.  Are you going to want
hardware GL/3D for games?  That means nvidia.  That means you go with
the generic Linux/XFree86 "nv" driver, or the proprietary Nvidia
driver, and that last means a kernel recompile.  ATI appears to be
trying to keep up but I haven't heard a lot of praise for their
attempts.
