You'd be a complete idiot to buy an x86 box that isn't an Athlon 64.  That's 
my two cents.  Mine (at work) is fast and reliable.  It's rock solid, and I 
love it.  My advice would be to go for a socket 939 variety.  If possible, 
wait for a SATA controller that supports NCQ (even if you don't plan to use 
it immediately).

We have ASUS A8V motherboards, and I'm really happy with 'em.  They DON'T 
support NCQ though.

Always look for Gentoo.  :)
