I have a Plantronics headset with mini plugs for mic and headphones and it works well with Skype. In fact, I've tried Skype between Linux (SuSE 9.2), Mac OS X, and the sole Windows system (actually a dual boot laptop with SuSE 9.2) in the house and they all interoperate great. The laptop is wireless and I've been able to communicate with my folks in Arizona with excellent voice quality - my father also has a wireless laptop he uses at the RV resort. Unfortunately, the provider in the park hasn't done such a great job with signal strength and so he sometimes has to sit in the lawn chair outside to get a good signal, which, admittedly, is probably not a tough thing to do given the difference in weather... :-) (why is that man over there talking to his laptop?) By the way, that reminds me, he was able to continue to use his Telus email config with Thunderbird. I called Telus in advance of their trip to check whether or not they block non-Telus IP addresses from their SMTP server and the tech rep was quite clear that they did and that it would not work. Telus also does not support POP before SMTP or SASL. Still, I wanted to confirm his claim for myself so I ssh'd over to a client who is on Shaw and was able to easily talk SMTP to mail.telus.net. I also ssh'd over to another client (not on this continent) and met with similar success. So, apparently, no matter what Telus says, you in fact _can_ continue to use your email config unaltered wherever you go. Can't say if this works with Shaw or not though. Just thought that might be useful to somebody.
