I use vnc with port forwarding through an ssh tunnel. Works nicely and affords you all the security of ssh. If you want to connect from a windows client then have a look at putty. Otherwise the man pages for ssh can tell you how to go about it on linux.
Thanks for the information -- at least now I will be looking under the right acronym. I am familiar with port forwarding but have never used SSH.
